Podcast: Play in new window
Taylor Piephoff, naturalist, member of the Mecklenburg Audubon Society, and the “bird whisperer” of Charlotte, discusses winter bird watching, the Christmas Bird Count, and more! Tune in to this week’s edition of the Carolina Outdoors for more on the birds seen in the Carolinas this winter.
Segment Highlights:
- To find out more about local birding, click HERE for the Mecklenburg Audubon Society’s website.
- The Christmas Bird Count occurs from December 14 – January 5th yearly. Click HERE to join the Christmas Bird Count! You can find your area and Christmas Counts near you within the site.
- If you’re looking for what to fill your bird feeder with, Taylor suggests a variety of seeds. His personal recommendation: a seed blend of black oil sunflower, safflower, and white millet. He sprinkles white millet on the ground for ground-feeding birds, while sunflower seeds are good for wrens and warblers.
- Water is also very important in cold spells throughout the winter. Make sure to include water in your bird feeders as temperatures continue to fall.
- Birding is a great pastime to enjoy the Carolina outdoors in the winter while leaves have fallen and air is clear.
