Podcast: Play in new window
In the Carolinas, the spring season brings an influx of migrating birds to their breeding or wintering grounds. Bird watching offers a great opportunity to get outside, enjoy nature, and slow down. This week on the Carolina Outdoors, Bill shares which birds to look out for in the area, tips for a successful day of bird-watching, and more.
What to Know:
- North and South Carolina are along the Atlantic Flyway, a major migratory route for birds stretching over 3,000 miles. In the spring and fall, millions of birds pass through our region.
- Bird watching offers an opportunity to slow down, be present in the outdoors, and enjoy nature.
- The best time for bird watching is just after sunrise until about 10 AM.
- A common mistake is to stare up at the trees. In springtime, birds usually feed eye level or lower.
- Move slowly and pause often. The best strategy is to stand still and wait for birds to emerge.
Look Out for These Species:
- Northern Cardinal
- Carolina Chickadee
- Blue Jay
- Morning Dove
- American Goldfinch
- House Finch
- Tufted Titmice
- Raptors
