NC Trout with Jake Rash

The trout streams of North Carolina are a huge part of the economy in the state, from permits and licenses to gear and guide sales to tourism. Jake Rash, the Coldwater Research Coordinator for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, joins the Carolina Outdoors this week to discuss trout in the state.

Highlights from The Episode:

  • In 2023, Jake calculated that for every dollar spent by anglers to fish for mountain trout in North Carolina, $1.93 is returned to the economy. This results in a $1.38 billion impact on the state’s economy.
  • There are approximately 5400 million trout in North Carolina, as well as 2600 acres of trout waters.
  • Trout waters are classified into six groups: 1) catch and release; 2) delayed harvest; 3) hatchery-supported; 4) special regulations; 5) wild trout waters; and 6) natural bait waters.
  • Jake’s motto in regards to Trout Fishing is “Know before you go”!
