Mike Haney, founder of Mike’s Spike, gives the Carolina Outdoors a beach update, the story of creating his beach umbrella anchor, and beach safety tips. Get your own Mike’s Spike at Jesse Brown’s this summer – available online and in the store!
What to Know:
- Mike Haney invented a beach umbrella anchor that keeps umbrellas sturdy and upright in the sand all day long.
- Now located in the Ocean Drive area of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Mike gives an update from the South Carolina coast, and talks about how he ended up moving there.
- Mike’s Spike was founded almost 20 years ago on Easter Sunday, when Mike and his wife were sitting on the beach. He had crafted an umbrella anchor using a PVC pipe, and his wife noticed that their umbrella was the only one on the beach that stayed upright all day. She said, “If what we’re doing works so well, why doesn’t everyone else do it?” and inspiration struck.
- Mike built 200 spikes and sold them out of his garage. He couldn’t keep up with the demand and eventually outsourced from China. He reflects on his first customer and how the spikes quickly became popular.
