Founder of Sea Threads: Sustainable Apparel – Part One

It’s no secret that plastic waste is an environmental issue – especially in our oceans. Sea Threads makes its products from 100% recycled ocean plastics sourced specifically from marine and coastal ecosystems. Dylan Cross, its founder, joins the Carolina Outdoors to share more about the company and how it works to improve our oceans.

Segment Highlights:

  • An estimated 75 to 199 million tons of plastic waste are currently in the world’s oceans. In addition, around 8 to 10 million tons of plastic enter the ocean each year.
  • Dylan Cross is the founder of Sea Threads. The company began in 2020 in Melbourne, Florida as part of a school project.
  • Dylan fly fishes in Florida! Fly fishing isn’t limited to the mountainous streams and rivers that we often talk about on the Carolina Outdoors.
  • Sea Threads is an apparel company that makes their products from repurposed plastics. However, they are set apart because they source 100% of materials from ocean plastics.
  • We often don’t realize that most of our clothing today is made of plastic. 60-70% of clothing has a synthetic component which includes plastic.
  • By repurposing plastic from coastal and marine ecosystems, the company can mimic the synthetic component now found in clothing today.
  • Sea Threads is partnered with Ocean Works, a company that works for the collection of ocean plastics. They specifically help Dylan and his company with their supply chain.
