Founder of Mike’s Spike Umbrella Anchor:
Mike Haney, inventor and founder of Mike’s Spike Hammerhead Umbrella Anchor, joins the Carolina Outdoors to share the story of the product’s invention, its usefulness, and his experience with the growth of communities along the Carolina coast.
Mike’s Spike is a specialized beach umbrella anchor with a pile-driving design that secures your umbrella in the sand, providing easy installation, great shade, and a secure umbrella even on the windiest days!
Segment Highlights:
- Although Mike grew up in Charlotte, he moved to the coast and now lives in the Ocean Drive area of North Myrtle Beach.
- Mike originally created his own “DIY” umbrella holder with a PVC pipe to make umbrella setup on the beach easier.
- The idea for Mike’s Spike was invented on a particularly windy day in 2006 when Mike and his wife were using his “DIY” umbrella holder & realized they were the only ones on the beach with an umbrella.
- In 2008, Mike moved forward with the process of creating Mike’s Spike, and now successfully sells to beachgoers throughout the Carolinas!
- Mike’s Spike is a sturdy PVC pipe cut into an angle so that it can be easily driven into the sand. A hammerhead metal tamp tamps the spike into the sand for secure installation.
- Beach communities face the problem of waste and litter with short-term vacationers who buy cheap tents and chairs when they arrive at the beach, and then leave them on the beach once vacation is over. Mike’s Spike makes it easy to set up beach umbrellas without hassle.
