Fall Foliage in Western NC - Fall Color Guy Dr. Howard Neufeld

Fall Foliage with the “Fall Color Guy”

Dr. Howard Neufeld, the “Fall Color Guy”, joins the show from Boone, North Carolina to discuss all things fall foliage. Why do leaves change color? Why do some leaves change to orange and yellow while other trees’ leaves change to red? How will Hurricane Helene impact the fall foliage this year? Dr. Neufeld answers these questions and more on this week’s episode of the Carolina Outdoors.

Highlights from Dr. Neufeld:

  • Hurricane Helene will not affect the color of trees that are still standing. However, so many trees were knocked down that there may be patches of gray or brown where there are less trees.
  • Winds knocked down trees on over 822,000 acres of land, which is 60% bigger than Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This could be up to 17 million trees that were downed.
  • Trees change color because they sense the shorter days and cooler temperatures.
  • The High Country of North Carolina is in peak foliage now – a great time to make a trip to western NC.
