Dove Hunting in the Carolinas with James Buice

As fall begins in the Carolinas, so does dove hunting season. September 2nd marks the opening day in both North and South Carolina. James Buice joins the Carolina Outdoors to share his experiences dove hunting in the Carolinas and beyond, safety tips, his favorite dove recipe, and more.

Dove Hunting Safety Tips:

  • For dove hunting, you need your HIP (Harvest Information Program) certification, which is added to your hunting license. Find the North Carolina certification here.
  • Make sure to bring water out into the field, especially if you have dogs or children with you.
  • Never have more than 3 shells in your shotgun at a time.
  • Don’t shoot at low birds. A good rule of thumb is not to shoot when the birds are below the horizon line.
  • Let others have a turn at birds.
  • The daily limit for dove hunting is 15 birds.

James Buice’s Dove Poppers Recipe:

Stuff a dove breast with cream cheese and jalapeno. Wrap the dove breast in bacon. Grill on medium-high heat and enjoy!
