With a slogan that reads, “You May Live.” you can bet the Summer Death Race is about as horrifying as it sounds. And when the finishers, a/k/a survivors are actually buried alive upon completion… well, let’s just say it probably takes a pretty special person to take on something like this. We talk to one such fella, Jason Allen, on Saturday’s “Carolina Outdoors” radio program on WBT 1110AM. Here’s a peek at his journal from this year’s event – yikes!
- Begin hike up Bloodroot trail at 09:00 am
Stop at 10:15 near stream all racers instructed to get in stream with packs and sit down.- Water is about 48 F. 30 minutes of harassment and instructions given. We are told theme of race is now “Life” and we will progress through our lives during the race.
- We get out (tough to do when you can’t feel your feet) and are told we are now babies. All racers told to take off all clothes except underwear and life jackets which we must wear.
- We are also told to take our day packs, sleeping bag, rope, anything else we think we will need for next 24 hours. We then duct tape our large packs closed and set them on side of trail.
- We head out nearly naked, bare feet, with day packs
