Johnson spoke to people of all hiking levels; his books & presentation both speak to lowering barriers to the awesome sport of hiking. His presentation followed trails that are mentioned in his new edition releases of and both of my bestselling Parkway trail guides—”Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway” and “Best Easy Day Hikes Blue Ridge Parkway“.
Johnson also covered trails in his brand new book, just released, “Best Easy Day Hikes Great Smoky Mountains National Park” & his national bestseller, “Hiking North Carolina.”
All in all it was a great evening for the hiking community. Johnson answered questions & signed several books before heading back to his home in Banner Elk, NC.

Jesse Brown’s sponsored Team StoneFly competed recently in an event in the NC mountains. The following are exerpts from the Yelton Press Release
LAKE LURE, N.C. (APRIL 25, 2010): The Rocky Broad River looked more like a mud bath than a trusted fishing hole after a torrential downpour swept through Lake Lure, N.C. the evening before the final round of the 2010 Olympiad Fly Masters Tournament on April 25, 2010 resulting in only four scored fish.
Typically, the top ten anglers from the previous day’s casting rounds advance to the fishing rounds where they are judged on the combined total of five fish caught within a two-hour timeframe. Mathematically, five fish from ten competitors equals a possible 50 fish. Due to extremely poor fishing conditions, no one caught fish in round one. As a result, all ten anglers were advanced to round two in hopes of someone catching something.
In third place with 9 inches was Paul Thompson from Marion, N.C. and member of Team Stonefly.
The overall winner of the casting rounds was Chris Smith of Fort Mill, S.C. and member of Team Stonefly.
The Olympiad Fly Masters is now part of the TroutLegend Fly Fishing Cooperative where points from seven different tournaments across North America are tallied up for placement on the National Leaders Board.

The tournament drew some of the top competitors in the southeast, including members of Team USA and Team NC.
After two rounds of fishing, our Team Stonefly member, Jason Buffkin ended up in a sudden death fish off with Team USA’s Josh Stephens. Both had to sprint to their beat, with the first one to hook and land a fish declared the winner. Stephens hooked and landed a fish in 58 seconds…a truly amazing feat.
Michael Yelton from our team took 5th, and Paul Thompson took 6th.
For more on the event visit us at www.teamstonefly.com. Click on the featured post as it appears, top center of the page.
On a related note, the second tournament in the southeast this year, the Olympiad Fly Masters, will be held in Lake Lure, NC on April 24th and 25th. Anyone can enter!
Finally, Stonefly will be competing in the America Cup in Frisco, Colorado this September. This is the premiere international fly fishing tournament in the US, with teams from Europe, Japan, and Australia attending.
Congrats from Jesse Brown’s to our busy Team Stonefly.

Jesse Brown’s very own, Bill Bartee, opened the Charlotte version of the Tour by reminding what the films were all about; aspiring, inspiring & encouraging people to get out there. The Charlotte Tour brought people together with a common interest….Fly Fishing.
Included at the Tour were Rocky River Trout Unlimited, Carolina Fly Fishing

Shelley Thornton of Mountain Khakis was on-Hand representing the brand. They helped give out prizes during intermission.
Carolina Red filmmakers were onhand for the Charlotte show. Mad Mike Benson, Brooks Oswald & Chad Fuller helped represent The Fly Fishing Film Tour working the booth & letting people know about the reasons they got into movie making.
Benson also helped pull the numbers for the raffle.
