The glamorous world of TV news — or is it? It’s a business journalists do for the love of craft and public service, but for Bruce Bowers the minute and ten seconds he got each night to share all he’d learned wasn’t nearly enough. He’s a storyteller at heart.
So 30 years ago, Bruce stepped out of the news business and started walking a new path — down a long and winding road called documentary filmmaking. His steps took him down the scenic views and curious tales of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

True to his heart as a journalist, he broke some news along the way. He learned why the Parkway is one of North Carolina’s most treasured beauties, and most visited attractions in our state — instead of Tennessee.
The answer, as you’d expect, is in your wallet. Money is just part of it, though. It keeps company there with something just as important to the fabric of America in the 20th century — something traded and agreed to in a backroom, handshake deal that is politics.
Bruce’s well-received documentary on the Blue Ridge Parkway was just the first of his travels around the globe. Step with him down the Long and Winding Road to hear the “story behind the story” about our western North Carolina treasure. He’ll be a guest at Storytellers Night at Jesse Brown’s on January 31.
