Podcast: Play in new window
One of the most participated pursuits in the United States is birdwatching, As spring comes to the Carolinas, so do the birds migrating south. Judy Walker of the Mecklenburg Audobon Society joins the Carolina Outdoors to talk about birds in the Carolinas this spring, hummingbirds, and more.
What to Know:
- Hummingbirds, goldfinches, and warblers are all making their way back to the Carolinas as part of the spring migration south.
- Birdsong is a way that birds announce their territory. However, they stop singing as breeding season concludes and they care for their young.
- Many hummingbirds find their way to the Carolinas as they migrate south, most often to Costa Rica.
- Hummingbirds remember if you’ve fed them in years prior – so don’t forget to put your feeders out!
- Birds are attracted to water in yards. Even if you don’t have a feeder, they will come to running water.
- Latta Park in the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte is a great spot to go birdwatching this spring. Look near the creek, where you’ll see colorful birds drinking and rinsing in the water.
