Duck Hunting in the Carolinas

Duck hunting season in North Carolina and South Carolina is currently in effect, ending on January 31st. Jimmy Dobes, president of Southeast Specialty Outdoors, joins the Carolina Outdoors to talk about the sport – from his own passion for the outdoors, to safety, to decoys and calls.

What You Should Know:

  • Duck hunting season in North and South Carolina ends on Saturday, January 31st, 2026.
  • However, NC has designed Saturday, February 7th as Youth and Veteran/Military Duck Hunting Day, which offers a special opportunity for these groups to hunt waterfowl.
  • Safety and respect for other hunters are some of the most important aspects of duck hunting.
  • Jimmy Dobes recommends scouting out where you are hunting prior to going. That way, you’ll be able to better navigate and stay safe (especially in early morning darkness).
  • Jimmy has found that the placement of decoys is more important than duck calls. Sometimes, ducks will go to land at the decoys without hearing a call.
