Smallmouth Fly Fishing & Success

Trout Guide Elijah St. Blancard

A few weeks ago we were talking about summer time trout fishing in the Carolinas and the affect that heat has on those fish.  However, what about other options.  Largemouth is one of the most pursued sport fish in the world, especially here in the south.  But what about its first cousin?  The Smallmouth
Lead guide and instructor from Jesse Brown’s jumps on the Carolina Outdoors to chat about warm months and small mouth fishing.  It has been really good lately.

Smallmouth bass fishing in the Carolinas offers a unique and thrilling experience for anglers, thanks to the region’s diverse waterways and favorable climate. Both North and South Carolina are home to a variety of rivers, streams, and lakes that provide excellent habitats for smallmouth bass, making them prime destinations for anglers seeking to catch this feisty fish.

North Carolina Smallmouth Fishing

In North Carolina, the smallmouth bass is commonly found in the western part of the state, particularly in the mountainous regions. The cool, clear waters of the rivers and lakes in this area provide ideal conditions for smallmouth bass. The French Broad River, the Nolichucky River, and the Tuckasegee River are among the most popular smallmouth bass fishing spots in the state.

The French Broad River, which flows through the Appalachian Mountains, is particularly renowned for its smallmouth bass population. Anglers often use a variety of techniques to catch smallmouth here, including fly fishing, casting with artificial lures, and live bait fishing. The river’s rocky bottom and swift currents create a challenging environment that tests the skills of even experienced anglers.

The Nolichucky River, another top destination in North Carolina, is known for its rugged terrain and deep pools, where smallmouth bass often lurk. This river offers a more secluded fishing experience, with fewer anglers and a more natural setting. The Tuckasegee River, on the other hand, is more accessible and popular for its consistent smallmouth catches, making it a favorite among local anglers.

In addition to rivers, several lakes in North Carolina, such as Lake James and Fontana Lake, are also prime spots for smallmouth bass fishing. These lakes provide a different fishing experience, often requiring deeper water techniques, such as jigging or trolling.

South Carolina Smallmouth Fishing

While South Carolina is better known for its largemouth bass fisheries, it also offers excellent opportunities for smallmouth bass fishing, particularly in the upstate region. The Broad River, which stretches across both North and South Carolina, is a prime location for smallmouth bass in the Palmetto State. The river’s combination of swift currents, rocky structures, and deep pools creates an ideal habitat for smallmouth bass.

The Broad River is particularly known for its “smallmouth run” during the warmer months when the fish become more active and move into shallower waters to feed. Anglers in South Carolina often use similar techniques to those in North Carolina, with topwater lures, crankbaits, and soft plastics being particularly effective.

Lake Jocassee, located in the mountainous region of northwestern South Carolina, is another hotspot for smallmouth bass fishing. Known for its deep, clear waters, Lake Jocassee offers a challenging but rewarding fishing experience. The lake’s steep banks and submerged structures provide excellent hiding spots for smallmouth bass, making it a favorite among local anglers who enjoy the thrill of the hunt.

Tips for Successful Smallmouth Fishing

When fishing for smallmouth bass in the Carolinas, it’s essential to understand the behavior of the fish and the environment they inhabit. Smallmouth bass are known for their aggressive nature, particularly during feeding times, making them a thrilling catch. Anglers should focus on rocky areas, underwater structures, and places with strong currents, as these are the preferred habitats of smallmouth bass.

Using the right equipment is also crucial. A medium-action rod with a fast tip is ideal for feeling the subtle bites of a smallmouth, while a reel with a good drag system is necessary to handle the fish’s powerful runs. Lures that mimic the natural prey of smallmouth bass, such as crayfish, minnows, and insects, are particularly effective in enticing strikes.

Overall, smallmouth bass fishing in the Carolinas offers a unique and rewarding experience for anglers of all skill levels. With the region’s diverse waterways and abundant fish populations, it’s no wonder that the Carolinas are considered top destinations for smallmouth bass fishing in the Southeast.
