Another packed house for Storyteller’s Night — and another great line up of guest, too. In fact, Storyteller’s Night is just about one of our jour favorite things. And it’s a pretty simple formula, actually. Three great guests with their own stories; snacks and beers, and friends like you stopping by to take it all in.

Whether or not you made it out to our May edition of Storyteller’s Night, we thought you’d enjoy revisiting the evening as told in tweets.

Across the Atlantic
Gil Middlebrooks is an attorney by trade and adventurer at heart. As his story’s title suggests, he sailed across the Atlantic on a boat much too small for our liking. His best advice — aside from not telling his wife he’d purchased a boat— was to take sailing lessons from a pro before setting sail with a captain and 6-person crew. Yes, he earned his anchor tattoo, but so far he’s yet to get the ink applied. Not sure we could go that long without coffee, either, Gil.
Gil: “Don’t like the way the captain’s doing it? Take note of the piece of #mistletoe hanging from the captain’s belt loop.”

Gil: “The scariest thing? Closing my legal practice for a month and giving the key to my wife.” #everythingwillbefine

Gil: I learned 1) throwing your phone away for 3 weeks is #magical 2) you better start taking. You have a lot of time. 3) even though the scenery doesn’t change, it’s just beautiful.

Pedals and Promises
Imagine riding your bike from here to California, saving another guy’s life along the way, and meeting Clint Eastwood during his shoot of a now-classic Western. That’s a helluva trip for an 18 year old guy. Now, imagine retracing that route 50 years later! Paul Neal didn’t just imagine it; he straight up did just that. Minus the lifesaving and Clint Eastwood chapters, it was still an amazing story. But it’s his personal backstory that raised our eyebrows, too!
Paul Neal did all sorts of not good things when he was young. So far that he’d taken a joyride in a stolen car and even walked into a store with the intention of robbing it!

it took 38 days at 18 years old. It took 36 days when he was 68. wow!

“Just because you screwed up the first part of your life, doesn’t mean you’ll screw up the second part.” — Paul Neal

Witness to “The Miracle”
We all know the story of the “Miracle on the Hudson,” and how Captain Sullenberger artfully plopped flight 1549 into that cold, January water just minutes after takeoff. Everyone survived the forced landing, which led to movies, books, investigations, and interviews for “Sully” and many more. Jim Whitaker was there, too. He shared his story of the flight that changed his life, and his perspective. Powerful stuff.
The baby, faith, and people don’t always behave like you’d expect them to.

Goose collides with a plane? Who wins? “The goose, of course!”

“New Yorkers do emergencies ‘very well.'” And he was on a water taxi headed for the Jersey shore in 10 minutes.
