Jesse Brown’s has spent the past fifty-three years celebrating the stories that our clients create outdoors & in life. This was the inspiration for Storyteller’s Night at Jesse Brown’s. For over ten years, this event has been one of our favorite times to get-together with the community within the walls of Charlotte’s outdoor store.
On Thursday, April 27th, 2023, the store located in the Southpark-area of Charlotte, will transform from an outdoor showroom, with Patagonia, Free Fly, Fly Fishing, & On Cloud Shoes, into a venue built for live theater. The outdoor clothing racks will be pulled aside & a stage is placed, center-store. The microphones will be tested & the seating set.The program will be introduced by Bill Bartee, shortly after 6 p.m. & our three storytellers will not disappoint. They each have twenty minutes to tell their extraordinary, true story of adventure, experience, or life-changing situation. Snacks & Drinks are provided by our sponsors, www.jessebrowns.com & the Carolina Outdoors Podcast
The stories & storytellers this April 27, 2023:
Charlotte has a strong Scouting community. The Boy Scouts of America has been in existence for over 100 years & Charlotte has set the bar with a high number of individuals that have reached Scouting’s highest award: Eagle
Roman Phillips, is a seventeen-year old junior at Ft. Mill High School. He reached Eagle last year. However, Roman continues to be active in Scouting & continues to set goals Beyond Eagle.
There are 21-required Merit Badges to obtain Eagle. Roman currently has over 130 Merit Badges.
During his story, you’ll learn about his path in Scouting, his challenges, & of course, the Merit Badges that he liked the most, along with the one’s that were less liked. You may even hear about the times that he’s skipped school for Merit Badges.
According to Phillips, “I have had the opportunity to try 139 different hobbies and maybe one of them will become a career path.”
Jesse Brown’s Outdoors welcomes Roman Phillips, our youngest Storyteller, on Thursday, April 27th, 2023, at 6 p.m.
What does it take to be a National Park Ranger? Helen S. Hossley answered that question by accepting that call after a seven month journey that was full of personal challenges, wild twists, & unending fun.
“But Do I Get to Wear That Neat Hat?” was the title of the book that was inspired by her time in the National Park Service (NPS).
She discovered that wearing the heat doesn’t immediately give you super powers or abilities. In fact, she found that you must practice & hone your skills while in challenging circumstances.
We’ll hear about those challenges. Dehydration, fatigue, & working through the “rules of the desert” while discovering herself & celebrating personal triumph.
Helen S. Hossley presents her story “That Neat Hat” on April 27th, 2023, at Jesse Brown’s Outdoors.

Almost everyone on the planet over the age of thirty remembers where they were on September 11, 2001. The day that a horrific terror attack took the lives of over 3,000 people at the World Trade Center (as well as, Pennsylvania & Washington, D.C.)
Russ Van Buren remembers. He was a witness to the attack & had an upfront seat to the collapse of the towers.
Powerless, helpless, & hopeless are the emotions that we all felt that day. Van Buren even more so. He tells his story of repressed memories & emotional scarring while on the search for insight, wisdom, & healing.
Van Buren will cover his background. Growing up in Texas, living & working in the financial world in Charlotte, & what he discovers about himself & others regarding honesty, kindness, & the compassion of others.
Jesse Brown’s Outdoors is excited to welcome Russ Van Buren to the Storyteller’s Stage. His story is an example that sometimes our adventures are not chosen by us. “Rise from Collapse” begins in tragedy but Russ helps lead us all to a place of love & healing.
