Our man Don Yager has thrown a line or two and he’ll tell you. If you want your gear to last, you’ve got to take care of it. If you’re headed out to the coast for some salt water fishing, here’s your down-and-dirty resource for keeping your reel clean!
During Your Trip (DAILY)
Remove Reel from Rod
Back Drag Break Off Completely
Submerge in freshwater for 2 hours
Drain Overnight in preparation for the next day’s fishing or travel
After Your Trip
Find a Flat Surface to lay a towel & disassemble Reel
Soak Reel & Spool Overnight in Freshwater
Allow everything to Dry
Lubricate shaft & latch with a drop of cleaner, lubricant or protectant
If your Reel has a Cork Drag then lubricate it with Neat’s Foot Oil or Vaseline.
Leave disassembled overnight
Reassemble & Store WITHOUT Drag Break tight
