Packing for a trip is a part of the experience itself. To pack light and tight for travel, means to pack with meaning and thoughtfulness. You’ll not only save you space and weight, but also the grief that comes with (literally) too much baggage, once the actual traveling has begun. And don’t be fooled by that wheeled luggage, either. At some point, you’ll probably have to lift that big bag, and wheels won’t help at all. Remember the weight limits on airlines matter, but even if you won’t be flying, the weight that we can comfortably carry is always a concern. Adventure trips & travel that require mobility, close quarters, or means that the lightweight packer is at an advantage. Plus, the less stuff you take the more you’ll enjoy the trip. Here are JB’s tips for keepin’ it light and tight!
1) Bigger is not always better: The first way to pack light and tight is to make sure that your luggage is of minimal size for your trip. It’s easy to pack too much when your bag is too big. (And remember what we said about the wheels!) Check out Jesse Brown’s selection of bags and luggage from Filson, The North Face, Osprey, Kelty and more for the bag that’s just right for your adventure.
2) Clothing fit for travel is worth it. Invest in clothing that is compactable and wrinkle-resistant. Today’s modern, synthetic clothing is super comfortable, low maintenance, lightweight & yes, compact. This can easily save a 1/3 the space comparatively. Added bonus: it doesn’t come out of your bag looking like a hot mess. Think Ex-Officio, Patagonia, Columbia Sportswear, and other brands built with travel in mind.
3) Edit like you mean it. Travelers, take a lesson from your camping and backpacking brethren, and use a disciplined approach to taking only what you’ll truly need for the trip. Watch the weather so you’ll know what to expect – and what to bring. And be like Santa: make a list, and check it twice.
4) It’s not just what you pack, but also how you pack it. Lastly, be aware of how you pack each item. Clothing can be rolled individually to save space; stuff socks into shoes; etc. Then packed by category into lightweight stuff sacks and other organizing items: Shirts, together, undies, together & toiletries, together in individual sacks help compartmentalize & save space. Save the plastic bags for the lunchbox, ya’ll. Sea to Summit travel products, stuff sacks and accessories at Jesse Brown’s can help you organize and maximize your packing.
