Father’s Day doesn’t have to be all ties and cologne, you know. In fact, there are lots of ways to celebrate with dad this weekend, and they won’t require a lot of serious lifting in the planning department. (Good news for you procrastinators!) Here’s Jesse Brown’s list of things do with with dad on Father’s Day. Enjoy!
Take dad fishing
No, seriously. It’s not as Father’s Day cliche as it sounds. Fishing with dad is a classic Father’s Day move. And you heard it here first. Fly fishing is the new golf. There’s plenty of gear and gadgets to enhance the experience, but even your old stuff will suffice. Just spring for that new fishing license. It’s about the time with dad, after all. The best part is, don’t have to go to the wilds of Montana to get a little time near the water with dad. Check out this list of close-by places from Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. http://wheretogobeyond.com/2016/09/get-hooked/
A walk in the woods
There are miles and miles of trails, greenways, and paths around these parts. There are nearly 40 miles of developed trail in the Mecklenburg County greenway system alone, connecting neighborhoods, shopping centers, restaurants, and breweries. A perfect pick to keep it close to home, or far away from “roughing it.” Want to pack on a little history with those miles in the woods? Check out more “out there” hikes for Father’s Day at Crowder’s Mountain or Kings Mountain National Military Park. http://www.charlottefive.com/day-trip-make-kings-mountain-national-military-park-your-next-destination/
Adventure time
If dad’s more the adventurous type, there’s a new game in town at Kinetic Heights. The area’s only indoor high ropes challenge center is tucked off Providence Road in the space that used to be an old grocery store. Zip lines, warped walls, parkour, high and low ropes courses — even a ninja warrior training course — are all indoors in this one-of-kind space. Yes, they’re open on Father’s Day. Pro tip: get a guide when you make reservations.
Summer Pops
If climbing, running, sweating, and all that aren’t dads thing, keep it classy with a picnic and tickets to the Charlotte Symphony Summer Pops. Tickets can be purchased in advance of the show this season, and there’s even a VIP option that includes a picnic basket from Reid’s, if you want to double down on the experience. Nerd dads, you’re in luck. The theme for the Father’s Day, June 18th show is the music from Star Wars.
DIY Tour
For the creative types and those hosting dad during his visit from out of town, why not show off Charlotte with a do-it-yourself tour? We’ve had lots of fun with listing friends creating “tours” that stopped at donut shops, pizza places, public art, and yes, even breweries. Google maps makes it easy. Just search “_____ near me,” and you’re on your way.
